Road Runner, the new high-speed onlineservice jointly owned by MediaOne Group, Time Warner, Microsoft Corp.,Compaq Corp., and Advance/Newhouse has more than 100,000 customers in theUnited States - making it the largest high-speed online service in theU.S. - the company announced today. The service is available in 14states served by Time Warner Cable and MediaOne encompassing about 30cities and counties.
MediaOne and Time Warner Cable finalized the merger of their respectivehigh-speed online services in June. Since that time they have worked tocombine their management and products and start the process of relocatingcompany headquarters to Fairfax County Virginia. Their cable affiliateshave continued to aggressively expand the reach of existing cable modemservices that are currently being marketed under the MediaOne Express andRoad Runner brands. MediaOne plans to rebrand its service to Road Runnersometime in the future.
"We continue to see unabated growth of this service," said Carl Rossetti,interim CEO for the new company. "In at least eleven markets ouraffiliates have reached six percent penetration levels and three of theseare over nine percent, exceeding both our expectations and our businessplan," he noted.
The new company, through its' Time Warner Cable and MediaOne affiliates,is currently marketing service to about 5 million homes. The servicewill eventually be able to reach more than 27 million cable homesnationwide. The new Road Runner is the largest cable modem service inthe United States and the second largest in North America.
