THE WB earned a 2.8/5 HH rating/share for the week of April 13, 1998 - extending its unbeaten streak versus UPN to 19 weeks. The sixth place network has not beaten THE WB since the week of December 1, 1997, and even the much hyped and heavily promoted debut of THE LOVE BOAT could not propel UPN past a week of mostly repeats on THE WB. In the season-to-date race, THE WB remains well ahead of UPN - posting a 3.1/5 HH rating/share to UPN's 2.8/4. THE WB continues to achieve the strongest season-to-date household growth of any network, building +19% in rating and +25% in share over the same period a year ago. In contrast, UPN has declined -13% in rating and -20% in share from last season's average.
THE WB also posted the strongest household gains for the week, as the network's 2.8/5 HH rating/share was up +17% in rating and +25% in share versus the equivalent week a year ago. ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX all declined versus the same week last year, while UPN delivered a modest +4% rating increase - despite 2 hours of THE LOVE BOAT and an original STAR TREK: VOYAGER.
THE WB delivered weekly gains across every key adult demo under 50, generating double-digit ratings gains among adults 18-34 (1.6/5 - up +33%), women 18-34 (2.0/6 - up +43%), women 18-49 (1.7/5 - up +42%), men 18-34 (1.2/4 - up +20%) and men 18-49 (1.1/3 - up +10%) and adults 18-49 (1.4/4 up +27%).
THE WB was the top-rated network among teens 12-17 for the week, racking up an outstanding 4.0/13 in the demo to defeat FOX (3.7/13), ABC (3.5/12), NBC (3.0/11), ABC (1.7/6) and UPN (1.6/5). Season-to-date, THE WB also continues to rank #1 amongst all networks in teens with a strong 4.4/13.
National Highlights - Monday, April 13, 1998
THE WB Monday notched a solid 3.5/6 on Monday, April 13 - building a share point (+20%) over its season-to-date average and jumping a remarkable +46% in rating and +50% in share over the equivalent Monday a year ago. THE WB line-up recorded a 1.7/5 among adults 18-49 - its highest numbers in that key demo in six weeks and up +42%/+25% in rating/share over the same week a year ago. THE WB also jumped dramatically year-to-year among women 18-34 (2.0/6), building +18%/+20% in rating/share over the same Monday a year ago, and among women 18-49 (2.3/6), improving +53%/+50% over last year. THE WB was the #1 rated network for the night among teens 12-17, racking up a 4.6/15 in that key demo, and also finished #1 among kids 2-11 with a strong 2.9/12.
7TH HEAVEN at 8:00pm secured a strong 3.7/6 HH rating/share against the launch of THE LOVE BOAT - right on target with its season-to-date average and defeating PUSH on ABC. The popular family drama also defeated PUSH across every key adult demo, outdistancing the ABC drama among adults 18-49 (1.7/5 vs. 1.6/5), adults 18-34 (1.5/5 vs. 1.2/4), women 18-34 (1.9/6 vs. 1.7/5), women 18-49 (2.3/7 vs. 2.1/6), men 18-34 (1.0/3 vs. 0.8/3) and men 18-49 (1.1/4 vs. 1.0/3). 7TH HEAVEN ranked #1 for the night among teens 12-17, racking up a solid 4.8/17, and continues to dominate among female teens, posting a top-ranked 6.1/21. The 8:00pm drama was also the top-rated program for the night among kids 2-11. In the key trendsetting demo of Persons 12-34, 7TH HEAVEN (2.3/8) topped both PUSH (1.7/6) and THE LOVE BOAT (2.1/7), and tied CBS (2.3/7). 7TH HEAVEN continues to achieve powerful year-to-year growth across every demo, posting double-digit increases on both a weekly and season-to-date basis versus a year ago.
The bonus episode of 7TH HEAVEN at 9:00pm echoed its lead-in's performance, scoring a super 3.3/5 HH rating/share to defeat UPN's TOTALLY RIDICULOUS (2.9/5). The 9:00pm run of the family drama registered a solid 1.7/4 among adults 18-49, up +21% in rating from the previous week, and scored a terrific 2.2/5 among women 18-49, gaining +16% over last Monday. Like the 8:00pm episode, the 9:00pm 7TH HEAVEN ranked #1 in its time period among teens 12-17 (4.4/14), female teens (6.1/20) and kids 2-11 (2.8/12). Among persons 12-34, the repeat episode topped UPN's special (1.8/5) and CBS's comedies (1.9/5).

Repeat episodes of THE WB Tuesday dramas delivered a 2.7/4 HH rating/share on Tuesday, April 14, 1998. THE WB topped UPN across every key demo under 50. At 8:00pm, a repeat episode of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER earned a 2.4/4 HH rating/share and posted a 1.3/4 among adults 18-49. BUFFY defeated JAG on CBS among women 18-34 (2.1/7 vs. 1.8/6), and topped UPN's comedy combo of MOESHA and CLUELESS across every key demo. BUFFY notched a solid 3.0/11 among teens 12-17, easily outdistancing UPN's teen comedies.
At 9:00pm, a repeat episode of DAWSON'S CREEK blew in with a 3.0/5 HH rating/share, matching last week's share performance and topping UPN's encore presentation of THE LOVE BOAT by 25%, as THE LOVE BOAT notched a 2.4/4. DAWSONÕS scored a strong 2.1/6 among adults 18-34, and topped THE PUBLIC EYE on CBS among women 18-34 (2.6/8 vs. 2.3/7). DAWSON'S CREEK dominated THE LOVE BOAT encore across every key demo under 50 - outscoring UPN by +33% among adults 18-49 (1.6/4 vs. 1.2/3) and by +91% among adults 18-34 (2.1/6 vs. 1.1/3). In LOVE BOAT's target women demos, DAWSON'S CREEK outpaced the encore by +136% among women 18-34 (2.6/8 vs. 1.1/3) and by +27% among women 18-49 (1.9/5 vs. 1.5/4). THE WB drama (2.6/8) easily beat CBS (1.8/6) and UPN (1.2/4) in the trendsetting demo of Persons 12-34 and ranked #2 in its time period among teens 12-17 (4.5/15).
National Highlights - Wednesday, April 15, 1998
THE WB Wednesday comedy block, featuring a night of repeats, garnered a strong 3.0/5 HH rating/share on Wednesday, April 15 - easily defeating UPN (2.5/4) for the night despite an original STAR TREK: VOYAGER and a much publicized SEARCH FOR JUSTICE special.
SMART GUY (R) registered a 2.4/4 HH rating/share, outdistancing UPN's SEARCH FOR JUSTICE special (1.4/3) by a full rating and share point.
SISTER, SISTER (R) delivered a 3.0/5 HH rating/share, building a share point off its lead-in and matching last week's solid performance.
THE WAYANS BROS.(R) scored a 3.3/5 HH rating/share at 9:00pm, and notched a solid 1.6/4 among adults 18-49 to outdistance CBS (1.5/4) in that key demo. In fact, the repeat episode of THE WAYANS BROS. defeated SALUTE TO ISRAEL on CBS across every key demo. The irreverent comedy also defeated the first half hour of an original STAR TREK: VOYAGER among women 18-34 (2.5/7 vs. 2.0/5) and women 18-49 (2.0/5 vs. 1.9/5). Among teens 12-17, THE WAYANS BROS. (4.6/15) was tied with DREW CAREY (4.6/15) to rank #1 in the time period, and THE WB comedy was a clear #1 among male teens (6.1/20).
THE STEVE HARVEY SHOW (R) achieved a strong 3.4/5 HH rating/share at 9:30pm, and widened the lead over CBS among adults 18-49 (1.7/5 vs. 1.4/4). THE WB comedy, like its lead-in, also outperformed CBS among adults 18-34 (1.9/6 vs. 0.8/2), women 18-34 (2.8/8 vs. 1.0/3), women 18-49 (2.3/6 vs. 1.8/4) and men 18-34 (1.0/3 vs. 0.7/2). STEVE HARVEY also topped UPN's original STAR TREK: VOYAGER among women 18-34 (2.8/8 vs. 1.7/5) and women 18-49 (2.3/6 vs. 2.2/6). The 9:30pm WB comedy was the top rated series for the night among male teens (6.7/20), and was a strong #2 in the time period among teens 12-17 (4.7/14).
National Highlights - Sunday, April 19, 1998
UNHAPPILY EVER AFTER, in repeat at 9:00pm, delivered a strong 3.1/5 HH rating/share - its best output in four weeks and up +15%/+25% versus the time period season-to-date average. The 9:00pm comedy scored a 1.4/3 among adults 18-49, matching the time period season average, and secured week-to-week rating gains across every key demo. In teens, UNHAPPILY notched an outstanding 5.1/16 to rank #2 in the time period right behind THE X-FILES (5.6/17) and finished as the 15th highest rated series for the week among teens.
The debut of YOU'RE THE ONE posted a 2.3/3, gaining +15% in rating from the previous week and improving +10% over the time period's season average. The new couple comedy also improved the time period among adults 18-49, earning a 1.1/2 - up +10% in rating over the time period season average. The new program matched the season-to-date figures among adults 18-34 (1.2/3), women 18-34 (1.3/3) and women 18-49 (1.1/3), and grew +20% in rating among men 18-34 (1.2/3) versus the season average. YOU'RE THE ONE's teen performance was strong, as the new comedy posted a 3.3/10 - up +27%/+25% in rating/share over the time period season average.
