DVD of Most Critically Acclaimed Film of the Year Has Two Original Featurettes, Interactive Los Angeles Map of Film Locales and Separate Musical Score Track
A special edition DVD of Warner Bros.' and Regency Enterprises' crime epic, "L.A. Confidential" will be available on April 21 from Warner Home Video. "L.A. Confidential," the most critically acclaimed film of the year with a current box-office of more than $62 million, won two Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actress (Kim Basinger) and Best Screenplay Adaptation.
Unique DVD features include:
- "Photo Pitch" - The first of two original featurettes produced especially for DVD illustrates how the director, Curtis Hanson, initially used his 1950's photography collection to pitch the film concept to producers. This presentation was also used to convey Hanson's vision of the film to all actors and crew members.
- "Off The Record" - This featurette, available only on DVD, contains interviews with director Curtis Hanson, principal actors and creators, author James Ellroy, a rare interview with producer Arnon Milchan plus sketches of major production design elements. Also included are never-before-seen screen tests with Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe, the two Australian stars who seamlessly assumed their roles as rival LAPD detectives in the early 1950's.
- "The L.A. of 'L.A. Confidential'" - This unique interactive map is a tour of the Los Angeles locations used in the film. The viewer is able to open a screen map of L.A., pinpointing the different locations used in the film. By clicking on any location, a scene from the film is described by director Hanson with commentary about the location, why it was chosen and how it was used.
- Audio-Only Channel - This feature allow listening of the musical soundtrack alone -- without picture and dialogue.
"We're excited to bring a film to DVD with such precedent-setting critical acclaim," said Thomas Lesinski, Warner Home Video's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Development. "DVD is the ultimate format to see 'L.A. Confidential' at its cinematic best. The unique added features just enhance the experience."
"L.A. Confidential" has set award records with the nation's film critics. It became the first film in history to win Best Picture and Best Director (Curtis Hanson) awards from the prestigious National Board of Review, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle and National Society of Film Critics; the latter three organizations also awarded the film Best Screenplay (Brian Helgeland and Hanson). It swept Best Picture nods from a record 11 critics' groups and 59 journalists with nearly 200 additional writers and organizations including it on their top 10 lists.
In addition to Ms. Basinger, the exceptional cast of "L.A. Confidential" features Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, David Strathairn, and Danny DeVito. Set in 1950's Los Angeles, the film is directed by Hanson ("The River Wild" and "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle") with a screenplay adapted from James Ellroy's celebrated book.
"L.A. Confidential" is a Regency Enterprises presentation of an Arnon Milchan/David L. Wolper Production. The executive producers are David L. Wolper and Dan Kolsrud. The film was produced by Arnon Milchan, Curtis Hanson and Michael Nathanson.
"L.A. Confidential" will also be available for rental on VHS on April 21 at local retail outlets. The dual-layer, single-sided DVD has a suggested retail price of $24.99 (catalogue #14913).
