America Online Offers Premium, Full-Computer Virus Protection to Members at No Additional Cost America Online Becomes the Only Online Service to Offer Premium Anti-Virus Coverage as Part of Basic Membership to Both Broadband and Dial-up Members McAfee VirusScan Online Will Be Centerpiece of AOL 9.0 Security Edition Launching Next Month DULLES, VA - America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company, today announced that it would make one of the leading virus-protection programs, McAfee® VirusScan® Online, available at no additional charge to its members. This makes America Online the first online service to offer comprehensive, automatically-updated anti-virus coverage as part of basic membership to both broadband and dial-up customers. McAfee VirusScan Online will be included with AOL® 9.0 Security Edition, the newest version of the AOL software, which was specifically designed to address online consumers' top safety and security concerns and will be released next month. "One of the most compelling needs for families today is to feel safer and more secure online, and we have made safety our top priority at AOL," said Jon Miller, Chairman and CEO, America Online, Inc. "That's why we started scanning every member e-mail attachment for viruses - blocking more than a billion last year - and why we offer our members broad spyware protection for their computers." "Today we're taking the next major step in providing greater peace of mind for our members by extending comprehensive and automatically-updated virus protection to the whole computer and making it a basic part of an America Online membership," Miller continued. "We've had an outstanding partnership with McAfee for two years, and we're pleased to expand that relationship by providing our members with McAfee's world-class premium virus protection." McAfee VirusScan Online -- which until now was a premium service sold separately to America Online members -- offers comprehensive, PC-based protection against infection from peer-to-peer file sharing, Web site downloads, infected CD-ROMs and disks, multimedia files, and more. And because it is always on and automatically updated, McAfee VirusScan Online provides America Online members broad protection from known viruses, trojans, and worms, whether members are online or not. "For years it has been McAfee's goal to provide the easiest to use, most effective anti-virus protection available to the largest number of home users possible. The more people who are using up-to-date protection, the less likely we'll see significant new virus outbreaks within the home-user community," said Bill Kerrigan, senior vice president, McAfee Consumer. "The McAfee partnership with AOL has proven to be an effective means of protecting millions of users around the world. This new aspect of our partnership both underscores McAfee's commitment to protect the largest number of home users possible through AOL's significant user base and also helps us to drive even greater consumer adoption of safe and secure computing." Nearly two thirds of consumers (63%) have been the victim of a virus infection in the past, and nearly one in five (19%) has an active virus on their computer, according to a groundbreaking in-home study of computer users released earlier this week by America Online and the National Cyber Security Alliance. The study also found that more than two-thirds of online users (67%) did not have current virus protection software. McAfee VirusScan Online automatically delivers available software upgrades and virus definition updates to the AOL member's PC whenever the member is connected to the Internet, helping ensure that their anti-virus software is up-to-date and their PC is better protected during the next virus outbreak. Other benefits of McAfee VirusScan Online for America Online members include:
In addition to the member's hard drive scan that may be scheduled to be performed automatically, McAfee VirusScan Online also lets members perform an on-demand scan of specific files, zipped files, folders, subfolders, drives, downloads, DVDs, and CD-ROMs at any time. When an infected file is found, McAfee VirusScan Online will automatically attempt to clean it. When the file cannot be cleaned, members have the option to delete or quarantine it. In addition to the full virus protection announced today, America Online also will continue its ongoing scanning of all incoming and outgoing attachments to members' e-mail each day for known viruses. If a virus is detected, the attachment is automatically cleaned of the virus, or, if the virus cannot be fixed or quarantined, the e-mail is returned without the infected attachment to the original sender with a notice that their attachment contained a virus. McAfee VirusScan Online does not require any special equipment. It will be included with AOL 9.0 Security Edition, and members will be given the option to download and activate it after the installation process. Members using earlier versions of AOL 9.0 can also download the software separately at Keyword: Anti-virus. Members who formerly subscribed to the premium McAfee VirusScan Online service will have the service included in their America Online membership without additional charge, regardless of what version of the AOL client the member is using.
