Cartoon Network's International Phenomenon 'The Powerpuff Girls' To Make Exclusive Debut in China On CCTV
February 27, 2003

Cartoon Network's popular series, The Powerpuff Girls, will soon be seen on terrestrial television in China through China Central Television Station (CCTV). Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific, Inc., announced this on February 25, 2003 in Beijing during a press conference at the Media Center.

Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls series will be launched though CCTV's animation block, "Cartoon City," on channels 1 and 7. The Powerpuff Girls is the first foreign animation in this animation block. The program begins its exclusive year long run on May 10, 2003. The Powerpuff Girls, one of the most popular programs on Cartoon Network will be viewed on CCTV, which reaches 90 percent of the 1.3 billion population of China. CCTV will dub and edit The Powerpuff Girls into 22-minute episodes in order to better suit the language patterns of Chinese children.

"We are thrilled to be taking this significant step into the Chinese market through our partnership with CCTV. It is a meaningful expansion of our overall cooperation within the PRC, said Mr. Steve Marcopoto, president and managing director, Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific, Inc. "With a combination of Cartoon Network's globally-popular programming and CCTV's local expertise, we hope that the Powerpuff Girls will become as well-loved in China as they are by children around the world."

The Powerpuff Girls is an original half-hour per episode animated series that follows the adventures of three super-powered sisters-Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup-who frequently ask to be excused from school so they can save the world. While preparing his concoction of sugar & spice and everything nice, Professor Utonium accidentally added a mysterious fourth ingredient, Chemical X. This fateful addition led to the creation of three sugar coated superheroes, otherwise known as The Powerpuff Girls, whose mission in life alters between fighting crime and winning at hopscotch.

Created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls debuted in November 1998 and is one of the Network's highest-rated shows. It was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1999 and 2000, and was also named one of TV Guide's "Top 10 New Kids Shows." The Powerpuff Girls were also named to Entertainment Weekly's list of the most powerful people in entertainment. The Powerpuff Girls, named the 2001 License of the Year, the Entertainment/Character License and the Soft Goods License of the Year by the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers' Association (LIMA), is currently the biggest retail phenomenon overseas particularly among girls aged 7-16.

Launched in the Asia Pacific in 1994, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s (TBS) Cartoon Network offers the best in animated entertainment. Drawing from the world's largest cartoon library of Warner Bros., MGM and Hanna-Barbera titles, the Network also showcases original series including Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow and Chicken, Dexter's Laboratory, Ed, Edd n Eddy, I Am Weasel, Johnny Bravo, Mike Lu & Og, Sheep In The Big City, Samurai Jack, Grim and Evil, Time Squad and The Powerpuff Girls under the Cartoon Cartoons banner.
