TNT and TBS Superstation Dominate Key Demos for January 2003

TNT and TBS Superstation Claim #1 and #2 among Adults 18-49 and 25-54 in Prime and Adults 25-54 in Total Day TBS Superstation and TNT Rank #1 and #2 in Adults 18-49 in Total Day TBS Superstation #1 in Adults 18-34 in Total Day TBS Superstation and Turner Network Television (TNT) dominated key demos for the January 2003 ratings period, as TNT and TBS Superstation placed atop adults 18-49 and 25-54 in prime and adults 25-54 in total day, with TBS Superstation taking #1 in adults 18-49 (TNT #2) and adults 18-34 in total day, according to Nielsen Media Research. TNT was paced by strong movie results and the network's multi-play premiere strategy for its Original Monte Walsh and The Perfect Storm as well as the network's collection of hall-of-fame dramas like Law & Order, ER, NYPD Blue and Charmed. Propelling the Superstation's success for the month was the premiere of its original movie America's Prince: The John F. Kennedy Jr. Story and the Super Bowl Sunday telecast of Father of the Bride. Among the January 2003 highlights for TNT and TBS Superstation:

  • TNT placed #1 among adults 18-49 (1,044,000) and adults 25-54 (1,194,000) in prime. This is the third consecutive January ratings period in which TNT has claimed #1 in adults 25-54 in prime. TBS Superstation placed #2 among adults 18-49 (1,018,000) and adults 25-54 (1,004,000) in prime. TNT had also placed #1 in delivery of adults 18-49 and 25-54 in prime for both the 2001-02 broadcast season and all of 2002.
  • TNT placed #1 in delivery of adults 25-54 (665,000) in total day, with TBS Superstation #2 (624,000).
  • TBS Superstation ranked as basic cable's #1 network for the month in total day delivery of adults 18-49 (644,000) and adults 18-34 (316,000). Sister network TNT finished second to the Superstation among adults 18-49 (594,000).
  • TNT placed #1 in prime in delivery of persons 2+ (2,373,000) and household delivery (1,717,000).
  • In prime, TNT posted growth vs. January 2002 in key metrics, including persons 2+ (2,373,000; up 8 percent); adults 25-54 (1,194,000; up 2 percent); and household delivery (1,717,000; up 14 percent). For total day, TNT posted growth among persons 2+ (1,249,000; up 17 percent); adults 18-49 (594,000; up 5 percent); adults 25-54 (665,000; up 13 percent) and household delivery (979,000; up 23 percent).
Among TNT's monthly programming highlights:
  • TNT's premiere of its Original Western Monte Walsh (Friday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m.), starring Tom Selleck, was the #1 program for the month in delivery of persons 2+ (7,516,000) and household delivery (4,914,000). The premiere of Monte Walsh ranks as the most-watched Friday program among ad-supported cable networks in history. TBS Superstation's Original America's Prince (Sunday, Jan. 12, at 8 p.m.) was the #2 program for the month in household delivery (4,279,000).
  • Vs. January 2002, Law & Order in prime on TNT continued to be factor in the network's growth, with double-digit increases across all key metrics, including adult 18-34 (328,000; up 21 percent); adults 18-49 (981,000; up 29 percent); adults 25-54 (1,202,000; up 31 percent); persons 2+ (2,420,000; up 19 percent); and household delivery (1,915,000; up 27 percent).
  • The fifth season repurposing of Charmed on TNT (Tuesdays at 10 p.m.), following its premiere on The WB, has also boosted the network with double-digit growth vs. January 2002. Among the highlights are adults 18-34 (445,000; up 15 percent); adults 18-49 (897,000; up 38 percent); adults 25-54 (979,000; up 73 percent); persons 2+ (1,657,000; up 65 percent); and household delivery (1,198,000; up 58 percent).
  • TNT's premiere of The Perfect Storm (Friday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m.) was basic cable's #1 theatrical of the month in delivery persons 2+ (4,053,000); adults 18-49 (2,316,000); and adults 25-54 (2,437,000). TBS Superstation's presentation of Pretty Woman (Sunday, Jan. 12, at 5:30 p.m.) was the #2 theatrical among persons 2+ (4,044,000) and adults 18-49 (2,040,000).
Among TBS Superstation's monthly programming highlights:
  • TBS Superstation's Original movie America's Prince: The John F. Kennedy Jr. Story, which premiered Sunday, Jan. 12, was basic cable's #1 movie for the month among adults 18-49 (2,488,000). The TNT Original Monte Walsh ranked second (2,256,000).
  • Father of the Bride, which aired Sunday, Jan. 26, as part of the Superstation's Hand Over the Remote Super Bowl counter-programming marathon, ranked as the #1 movie for the month among adults 18-34 (1,155,000).
  • The Hand Over the Remote marathon led the Superstation to rank as basic cable's #1 network on Super Bowl Sunday among adults 18-34 (463,000), adults 18-49 (954,000) and adults 25-54 (980,000).
  • TBS Superstation's Non-Stop Comedy Block (Monday-Friday, 4:30-8 p.m.) continues to show strong growth month-to-month growth among key adult demos. When compared to the same time period in January 2002, adults 18-49 were up 23 percent (962,000 vs. 779,000), adults 25-54 up 34 percent (882,000 vs. 660,000) and adults 18-34 up 16 percent (547,000 vs. 470,000). The block has also shown strong month-to-month growth since its premiere in October 2002.
