'Newsnight With Aaron Brown' Premieres Monday
October 30, 2001

CNN's Lead Anchor for Breaking News and Live-Event Coverage Debuts Signature Evening News Program;

Hour-long NEWSNIGHT WITH AARON BROWN to Air Weeknights from 10-11

NEWSNIGHT With AARON BROWN, CNN's flagship evening news program, will debut on Monday, Nov. 5, at 10 p.m. (ET), it was announced today by Sid Bedingfield, executive vice president and general manager of CNN/U.S. Built around Brown's distinctive style and storytelling, the program will explore the major issues of the day through hard-hitting reporting and probing interviews. The program, which has evolved out of the newscast Brown has anchored since the events of Sept. 11, will also serve as a showcase for CNN's stable of national and international correspondents and feature the best of CNN's enterprise reporting.

"It is Aaron's voice and reporting style — smart, witty and, above all, human — that distinguishes this program," Bedingfield said. "This program will be a nightly conversation between Aaron and his viewers on the issues that matter most to them."

Brown, an award-winning broadcast journalist, joined CNN in July and was scheduled to launch his program in mid-October. Less than an hour after the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, Brown began covering the unparalleled event from a rooftop in New York City. His round-the-clock live reporting from several points in New York City, including "ground zero," has provided CNN audiences with constant updates and insights as the immediate crisis turned into a search-and-rescue mission and ultimately a war on terrorism.

"The fact that we are living through one of the most momentous stories of our time makes developing a program with reporting, analysis and stories that you won't find anywhere else all the more purposeful," Brown said.

Based in New York, Brown will continue to take a lead role in major breaking news and live event coverage

Brown joined the network from ABC News where he had served as a correspondent since December 1991. Brown was one of the original anchors of World News Now, ABC's highly acclaimed overnight news program. While at ABC, he also reported for World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Nightline and other ABC News broadcasts. He played a lead role in covering many recent news stories, including reporting on the death of Princess Diana and the British return of Hong Kong to the Chinese government. Brown also covered Nelson Mandela's historic election as president of South Africa, the restoration of Jean-Bertrand Aristide to the head of Haiti's government and the California earthquake in 1994. In the early days of the O.J. Simpson case, Brown also was on the air, live during Simpson's slow-motion car chase.

Before joining ABC News, Brown anchored the evening newscast for KIRO-TV in Seattle. Prior to this, Brown spent 10 years at Seattle's KING-TV as a reporter and anchor.

Brown has won three Emmy awards, a duPont-Columbia Award and several Sigma Delta Chi awards for political, general and sports news reporting and for an Outstanding Documentary.

Brown is a native of Hopkins, Minn., and began his broadcasting career as a radio talk show host in Minneapolis and later in Los Angeles.

CNN, a division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., an AOL Time Warner Company, is one of the world's most respected and trusted sources for news and information.
