'Cry Freetown' Documentary Adds Overseas Press Club Award to List of Honors The Overseas Press Club of America has honored CNN Productions and Insight News Television, LTD. for Best International Reporting in the Broadcast Media Dealing with Human Rights for Cry Freetown. The Overseas Press Club awarded the documentary about the civil war in Sierra Leone with the Eric and Amy Burger Award at its 62nd annual ceremony on Thursday, April 26. Cry Freetown is a captivating story about the brutality in Sierra Leone caught on camera by photojournalist Sorious Samura. Risking his life to film the systematic murder of his fellow countrymen and women during this war and the only journalist on the scene, Sorious captured on video some of the atrocities committed by the rebel and Nigerian "peacekeeping" forces as almost everyday acts of war. A year after the violence, Samura returned with his camera to relive the extraordinary events he experienced and to find the people victimized by the brutality he had witnessed. Cry Freetown was co-produced by Insight News Television's LTD., CNN Productions and Channel 4 television in the United Kingdom . Cry Freetown is now a multiple award winner. In January, the Columbia University-sponsored Alfred I. duPont Awards honored Samura with the Silver Baton Award, and in March, the documentary won the University of Georgia-sponsored George Foster Peabody Award. In the past year, Cry Freetown has won several international awards. In 2001, Cry Freetown has been chosen as a finalist in various award competitions and continues to be submitted for screenings and awards in numerous countries. CNN also won citations for two other packages. The Overseas Press Club awarded Alessio Vinci's "Uprising in Belgrade" its David Kaplan Award for Best TV Spot News Reporting From Abroad for and its Edward R. Murrow Award for Best TV Interpretation or Documentary on International Affairs for CNN Perspective's "Rehearsing Doomsday." Both awards are named in honor of Kaplan and Murrow and are honors given by the Overseas Press Club.
