CNN is Viewers Cable Network of Choice for Democratic and Republican National Convention Coverage

CNN Leads 24-Hour News Networks with More Viewers than its Competition Combined
More than 1,100 Interviews, 50 Correspondents and 90 Special Reports Provided Audiences Worldwide the Most Extensive In-Depth Coverage and Analysis

CNN/U.S.'s extensive in-depth coverage was the viewers' cable network of choice for the Democratic and Republican national conventions, out-performing all 24-hour cable news competition in rating, delivery and total viewers in prime time (8-11 p.m. ET) throughout the Democratic National Convention from Aug. 14-17 and the Republican National Convention from July 31-Aug. 3. For the four nights of the Democratic National Convention, CNN/U.S. averaged a 1.6 rating, 1,239,000 household delivery and 1,622,000 total viewersæmore than the combined total viewers and household delivery of its cable competition.

CNN garnered a 220 percent increase in rating, 207 percent increase in household delivery and 237 percent increase in total viewers compared to its July 2000 prime-time average. On the final day of the Democratic National Convention, CNN/U.S. posted a 1.7 rating, 1,366,000 household delivery and 1,819,000 total viewers during prime time. The network's coverage peaked during Vice President Gore's acceptance speech, which posted a 2.3 rating, 1,789,000 household delivery and 2,332,000 total viewers.

LARRY KING LIVE averaged a 1.8 rating and delivered 1,427,000 households and 1,845,000 total viewers during his 9-10 p.m. (ET) special convention program.

The CNN.com community message boards set a record for usage during the second day of the Democratic National Convention, Tuesday, Aug. 15, serving more than 255,000 page impressions. CNN.com's message boards averaged 150,000 page impressions daily with dramatic number increases during breaking news and event coverage.

CNN's coverage of both conventions was carried over multiple CNN News Group services, including CNN/U.S., allpolitics.com, CNN.com, CNN Newsource, CNN Headline News, CNNRadio, CNN Airport Network, CNN en Espanol, CNNfn, CNN International, CNNRadio Noticias and the CNN Student Bureau.

Contributing to CNN's coverage were more than 50 on-air anchors and correspondents who conducted more than 1,100 live interviews. The interviews included Joseph Lieberman, Republican vice-presidential candidate Dick Cheney, former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford; Laura Bush; Lynne Cheney; Hadassah Lieberman; Gen. Colin Powell; Sen. John McCain; Sen. Ted Kennedy; Caroline Kennedy; White House Chief of Staff John Podesta; Bush political strategist Karl Rove; and Bush campaign spokesperson Karen Hughes. Throughout the two conventions CNN.com had more than 100 online chats with newsmakers. allpolitics.com provided Internet users with the most comprehensive convention coverage available on the Internet.

allpolitics.com's convention coverage included:

Fifteen of CNN/U.S.'s most popular news programs aired live from the network's convention skybooths in Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The network's coverage was supplemented by 90 special reports that examined the history of the parties and conventions, international policy, money and advertising. CNN's prime-time ELECTION 2000 coverage was anchored by Greenfield, Bernard Shaw and Judy Woodruff. The coverage included interviews, reports and analysis from Wolf Blitzer and Bill Schneider, as well as CROSSFIRE's Press, Robert Novak and Mary Matalin; and THE CAPITAL GANG's Novak, Mark Shields, Margaret Carlson, Al Hunt and Kate O'Beirne. Reporting from the convention floor was senior political correspondent Candy Crowley, senior White House correspondent John King; Washington, D.C., bureau chief Frank Sesno; and NEWSDAY co-anchor Jeanne Meserve. Blitzer served as the network's main convention podium reporter.

  • CNNRadio provided its more than 1,900 worldwide affiliates with extensive live special reports at the bottom of the hour during prime convention hours and will offer live updates in all its newscasts throughout the day and into the evening;

  • CNNRadio Noticias' White House correspondent Jacobo Goldstein provided live cut-ins to 18 Latin American countries, including the Caribbean and Spain;

  • Emory University's CNN Student Bureau reporter Jason Freidman provided reports from the convention to CNN NEWSROOM, the network's daily education program designed specifically for schools, and online for CNN's allpolitics.com.
