December 30, 1999

AOL MEMBERS RECORD LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS IN AMERICA ONLINE MILLENNIUM TIME CAPSULE World's Largest Time Capsule to Close at Midnight on December 31, Will Be Sealed and Preserved Until the Year 3000 Dulles, VA - December 30, 1999 - America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive service, today announced its "last call" for members to participate in the AOL Millennium Time Capsule, the largest time capsule in the world. In less than 48 hours, AOL will seal and preserve the online time capsule, not to be opened until the next millennium milestone -- the year 3000. To date, in celebration of the new millennium, more than 40,000 AOL members have created and submitted entries to the AOL Time Capsule and recorded their legacy for future generations. At AOL Keyword: Time Capsule, members can submit up to 100 words of text and also have the option of linking to their AOL Hometown homepage. AOL will accept entries up to midnight, December 31, 1999, and promises to preserve them by the best means possible, to be opened at the end of the 3rd millennium. "The interactive medium is changing the way people communicate and how they want to mark important milestones in their lives," said Jonathan Sacks, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the AOL service. "We consulted with experts, including the International Time Capsule Society, to create a time capsule worthy of our more than 20 million members. The AOL Millennium Time Capsule was designed to provide them with the easiest and most convenient way to reach out to future generations." The AOL Millennium Time Capsule will be preserved by two redundant methods: perpetual reproduction and CD ROM encapsulation. AOL will preserve the time capsule online by means of perpetual reproduction so that as long as AOL evolves and changes its content with the evolution of the online medium, the time capsule entries will be updated and preserved as well. In addition, AOL will also preserve the time capsule entries offline via CD ROM and hard drive encapsulation. AOL's Countdown to the Millennium and Millennium Party In addition to the AOL Time Capsule, AOL's Countdown to the Millennium special (AOL Keyword: Millennium) offers members the latest millennium news and updates, a Y2K Survival Kit with Y2K bug updates, tips for protecting investments and money, and travel ideas for 2000, plus a Millennium Store featuring a wide variety of merchandise to commemorate and celebrate the millennium.
