Time Warner Honors Employees' Outstanding Volunteer Achievements with 28th Annual Andrew Heiskell Community Service Awards
June 09, 2009

Time Warner Inc. today announced the winners of its 28th annual Andrew Heiskell Community Service Awards. Named for Andrew Heiskell, the late former Chairman and CEO of Time Inc., the awards were presented this afternoon at the Time Warner Center in New York City to six individuals and two teams in recognition of their exceptional community and public service contributions.

Jeff Bewkes, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner, said: "We're proud to recognize the outstanding achievements of this year's award winners whose generosity and compassion have made a real difference in the communities in which we do business. Their dedicated public service underscores the spirit of volunteerism that has always been a hallmark of our company.”

In addition to the six individual honorees, Time Warner presented its annual Community Service Team Award, which recognizes a group of employees that exemplifies Time Warner's values of responsibility and teamwork. This year, Time Warner also presented for the first time a Business Citizenship Award to recognize a strategic business initiative that adds value to the company and benefits the community.

Each Andrew Heiskell Community Service Award winner receives a $3,000 donation to the nonprofit organization or organizations of his or her choice and a personal honorarium of $2,000. For both the Community Service Team Award and the Business Citizenship Award, Time Warner makes a $10,000 donation to the nonprofit organization or organizations of the winners' choice.

This year's award recipients, who were nominated by their peers and chosen from among Time Warner's approximately 38,000 employees worldwide, are profiled below.

Ken Frawley, Vice President, Information Management, Time Inc., Parsippany, New Jersey, who has volunteered for more than five years at Minds Matter, an organization that helps high school students from low-income families improve their academic performance. Ken plays an integral role in mentoring students, managing other mentors, setting the agenda for program sessions and leading fundraising activities.

Kay Madati, Vice President, Audience Experience, Turner Broadcasting System, Atlanta, Georgia, who is a founder and current Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School (BECS). Kay's passion for education led him to join six of his friends in opening BECS in 2003. The school now serves more than 700 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Lisa Moss, Senior Photo Editor, AOL, Dulles, Virginia, who along with her husband Rob created SeizureTracker.com, a free online tool that logs seizure activity and other information to assist doctors with the treatment of seizure-based disorders. The Mosses have a five-year-old son diagnosed at infancy with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) and epilepsy. As DC Metro Co-Chair of the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, Lisa helped raise over $100,000 for TSC research in 2008 and successfully lobbied Congress for millions more. Lisa has also recently joined the board of directors for the National Epilepsy Foundation.

Ulysses Muller, Maintenance Technician, HBO, New York, New York, who along with four friends founded the Men of Vision Enterprise (M.O.V.E.), an organization focused on educating, empowering and inspiring at-risk youth in the Brooklyn neighborhood where Ulysses grew up. Since 2003, M.O.V.E. has conducted life skills workshops at local schools and shelters.

Betty Nguyen, CNN Anchor, Turner Broadcasting System, Atlanta, Georgia, who in 2000 established Help the Hungry, a foundation that provides humanitarian aid to impoverished areas in her birth country of Vietnam. Betty has spent several weeks each year in flood-ravaged areas of Vietnam, delivering food, clothing and medical supplies to families. She has also led fundraising efforts to provide relief to villages, schools and orphanages in Vietnam.

Business Citizenship Award
TIME

TIME magazine published a cover story in September 2007 titled "The Case for National Service.” The issue helped spark a national dialogue on the subject and the creation of a group of more than 100 service organizations called ServiceNation. Throughout 2008, ServiceNation worked with TIME and other partners to continue that dialogue, culminating in the ServiceNation Summit in New York on September 11-12, 2008, featuring then-presidential nominees John McCain and Barack Obama. TIME published a second issue on national service in September 2008 to mark the candidates' forum. The special issues on national service called the full resources of the TIME brand into action. While the editorial staff readied the content for print and online publication, TIME's business staff – from marketing to ad sales to events – helped broker sponsorships and partnerships between ServiceNation and other organizations. These efforts have kept the TIME brand at the forefront of national service advocacy and are an example of how Time Warner's businesses go hand in hand with fulfilling its broader role as a corporate citizen.
