Popular Science Surges 16.5 Percent in Single Copy Sales Time4 Media's Popular Science experienced a remarkable 16.5% surge in newsstand growth in the first half of '06 vs. the first half of '05, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulation Fas-Fax report released today. This is a continuation of a trend that began in the second half of '05 when Popular Science's newsstand sales were up 10%. Already the largest-selling science and technology title on the newsstand, Popular Science is continually increasing its leadership position by a wider margin; category share rose from 27% to 32% (up 19% YOY). PopSci's revised cover strategy and the natural demand for the magazine's content are credited with contributing to this overall growth. "From wireless and security technology to medical innovations, the increasing importance of science and technology in our daily life makes PopSci more relevant than ever," said Gregg Hano, Publisher of Popular Science. "This growth on newsstand shows that PopSci is leading the dialogue in these arenas." In January '06, Popular Science debuted a streamlined new design with a distinctive cover strategy. Photo-real images with a 'wow' factor engage the reader at newsstand, and an organized structure delivers messages that are instant and clear. The 16.5% growth coupled with online page views up 50%, online subscriptions up 70% and the response to direct mail projected at being up 62%, illustrates that natural demand for Popular Science is growing across the board. (Overall circulation is down 150,000 to 1.3 million as a result of a strategic rate base reduction implemented in January of 2006.) Founded in 1872, Popular Science is the world's largest science and technology magazine, with a circulation of 1.3 million and 6.6 million readers. Each month, Popular Science delivers "The Future Now," reporting on the intersection of science and everyday life with an eye toward what's new and why it matters. Our readers believe that the future is going to be better, and Popular Science gives them the tools and information to improve their technology and their world. The winner of the 2004 National Magazine Award for General Excellence, Popular Science is published by Time4 Media, the world's leading publisher of enthusiast magazines.
