NYC COLLEGE PREP PROGRAM

For many students in New York City, out-of-school time programs are a critical resource for broadening their educational opportunities and helping them prepare for college. Since 2005, Time Warner has supported a select number of college prep programs in New York City that are successfully increasing the academic performance of underserved middle and high school students and helping them make the successful transition to college. These programs include rigorous academic components and extensive leadership development training

Time Warner grants awarded in 2007 support:

Albert G. Oliver Program
www.theoliverprogram.org
The Oliver Program cultivates the next generation of leaders by providing exceptional African American and Latino youth in New York City with access to selective independent schools and continued support for achieving their future academic and professional goals. With Time Warner support, the Oliver Program will expand its academic enrichment activities in science and math and strengthen its recruitment strategies targeting African American and Latino males.

Bank Street College of Education: Center for Leadership and College Preparation
www.bnkst.edu
Bank Street, a nationally recognized leader in education, offers two college prep programs targeting underserved youth through its Center for Leadership and College Preparation: The Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) works with at risk youth and provides them with educational and psychosocial services to help them succeed in high school and make the transition to college. I-LEAD (Institute for Leadership, Excellence and Academic Development) serves high-achieving students at under-resourced schools and prepares them to become competitive applicants to selective colleges and universities. With Time Warner support, the LPP program will strengthen its academic offerings and develop a three-week residential college experience for students.

College Summit
www.collegesummit.org
College Summit builds the capacity of schools to increase college-going by training high school student influencers who build college-going cultures in their schools, while teachers and counselors utilize a curriculum to help all students create postsecondary plans and apply to college. College Summit operates local offices in Colorado, California, West Virginia, the National Capital Region (DC, VA, and MD), St. Louis (MO) and South Carolina, and launched a pilot site in New York City in 2005. Time Warner funding will help the organization expand its partnerships in New York City and increase the number of students participating in the program.

Columbia University: Double Discovery Center
www.columbia.edu
Columbia's Double Discovery Center houses two educational programs serving low-income and first generation college bound students: Talent Search, a career and college counseling program for students in grades 7 through 12, and Upward Bound, an intensive, year-round college preparatory program for high school students. With Time Warner support, the Center will strengthen the college prep component of the Talent Search program.

Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ)

Harlem Children's Zone is a pioneering, community-based organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the well-being and healthy development of youth in Central Harlem. Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF)
www.heaf.org
HEAF, an education and youth development organization, works primarily with students from the Central Harlem and Washington Heights communities to help them develop the attitudes, skills and values that will enable them to lead satisfying and productive lives. Let’s Get Ready
www.letsgetready.org
Let’s Get Ready recruits, trains and supports 600 college volunteers each year to spearhead highly successful LGR college prep programs in their communities. LGR has developed partnerships with 13 colleges and universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Barnard, Baruch and NYU, as well as high schools and community-based organizations to establish LGR programs. Time Warner is supporting the expansion of LGR in New York City.

Posse Foundation
www.possefoundation.org
The Posse Foundation identifies, recruits, and trains youth leaders from urban public high schools, who may be overlooked by the traditional college selection process, and sends these students to college in multicultural teams or “posses”. Posse currently has sites in six major cities across the United States: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. With Time Warner support, Posse will increase the number of students served in New York City.

Prep for Prep
www.prepforprep.org
Prep for Prep identifies talented students from minority group backgrounds, prepares them for placement in independent schools, and provides them with a sense of community, peer support, critical post-placement services, and a range of leadership development opportunities. Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO)
www.seo-ny.org
SEO works with motivated youth to help them develop throughout high school, college and their careers. The organization provides services through three major programs: the Career Program, the Scholars Program, and Alumni and Philanthropy Programs. With Time Warner support, SEO will strengthen the Scholars Program by increasing the availability of essay writing and math classes and integrating computer-based tools to improve teaching and learning in math.

Summer on the Hill
www.summeronthehill.org
Summer on the Hill recruits public school students in the second grade and prepares them for admission to independent, parochial, and specialized public high schools. Once in high school, students participate in academic enrichment and college prep activities through the organization’s Post Placement Program. With Time Warner support, the Post Placement Program will implement a pilot initiative to help students as they make the transition to high school and provide additional academic enrichment and test prep opportunities for these students.

Teak Fellowship
www.teakfellowship.org
Teak Fellowship helps talented students from low-income families gain admission to and succeed at top parochial, public and independent high schools and selective colleges. With Time Warner support, Teak will increase opportunities for intensive tutoring and test preparation for high school students in the Post Placement Program, and strengthen its alumni program to support Fellows as they transition to college.

NYC COLLEGE PREP CAPACITY BUILDING INITIATIVE

We know that for many middle and high school students in New York City, out-of-school time programs in their communities are a critical resource for broadening their educational opportunities and helping them prepare for college. In 2007, we extended our support to community-based organizations that are providing some college prep services but want to expand and strengthen their offerings and require additional capacity to do so. With the Partnership for After School Education (PASE), a leader in providing training and resources to build the capacity of youth-serving organizations, Time Warner launched a pilot professional development initiative to strengthen the skills needed to provide high-quality programs and services and improve the design, delivery, and impact of college prep programs for underserved youth
