![]() The HBO and Cinemax brands were #1 and #2, respectively, in primetime and total day ratings among all premium pay-TV services in 2009. HBO aired four (True Blood, Entourage, Hung and Big Love) of the network's six highest-rated shows ever in 2009. HBO's original productions continue to be recognized as some of the most innovative, honored and critically acclaimed programming on television. In 2010, HBO won four Golden Globe Awards, more than any other network. The HBO Documentary Films presentation Music by Prudence received an Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject), and HBO Sports won nine Sports Emmy Awards, the most of any network and the most ever for HBO. HBO also won three George Foster Peabody Awards in 2010. In 2009, HBO received 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most of any network for the seventh consecutive year, and Sheila Nevins, the president of HBO Documentary Films, received the prestigious Governors Award. In 2010, HBO is debuting two new drama series: Treme, from David Simon (creator of HBO's The Wire), featuring an ensemble cast in the story of the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina; and Boardwalk Empire, from executive producers Terence Winter (The Sopranos) and Martin Scorsese, and starring Steve Buscemi and Gretchen Mol in the story of the rise of Atlantic City during the Prohibition era. HBO also premiered two half-hour comedy series in 2010: How to Make It in America, starring Bryan Greenberg and Victor Rasuk in the story of two enterprising Brooklyn twenty-somethings determined to achieve the American dream; and The Ricky Gervais Show, an animated adaptation of Gervais' hit podcasts featuring the comedian, his collaborator Stephen Merchant and their offbeat friend Karl Pilkington. Returning HBO series in 2010 include the second seasons of Hung, Life and Times of Tim and Eastbound & Down, the third seasons of True Blood and In Treatment, the fourth season of Big Love, the seventh season of Entourage and the eighth season of Real Time with Bill Maher. HBO Films' dramas for 2010 include three movies: Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes in the title role as the author, animal scientist and autism advocate whose own autism affords her uncanny insights into the complexities of animal behavior; You Don't Know Jack, starring Al Pacino, Susan Sarandon and Brenda Vaccaro and directed by Barry Levinson, which follows Dr. Jack Kevorkian's legal battles defending a patient's right to die; and The Special Relationship, with Michael Sheen, Dennis Quaid, Hope Davis and Helen McCrory, in a story about the relationship between the Blairs and the Clintons. In 2010, HBO is also presenting the 10-part miniseries The Pacific, which tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines across the Pacific Theater during World War II. The Pacific is executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, the producing team behind HBO's award-winning miniseries Band of Brothers. HBO Documentary Films for 2010 include A Family Is a Family Is a Family: A Rosie O' Donnell Celebration, a moving portrayal of the remarkable diversity of families today; Sergio, the inspiring story of a dashing U.N. diplomat and his most treacherous mission; Reporter, which follows Nicholas Kristof, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist whose stories have helped put the focus on worldwide humanitarian issues; If God is Willing and the Creek Don't Rise, Spike Lee's follow-up to When the Levees Broke; Traumatology: The Art of Coming Home, executive produced by James Gandolfini; and a 10-week documentary summer series that includes Smash His Camera, Gasland and For Neda. Internationally, HBO's branded television networks, along with the subscription video-on-demand products HBO On Demand and HBO Mobile, bring HBO services to over 60 countries and reach 40 million subscribers, as of March 2010. HBO programming is sold into over 150 countries worldwide. In early 2010, HBO acquired full ownership of its joint venture HBO Central Europe and increased its ownership in HBO Latin America. HBO continues to be at the forefront in technological innovation and content distribution with advancements that include the availability of HBO programming online though HBO GO; the launch of HBO On Demand and Cinemax On Demand in HD; the expansion of its offerings on iTunes; the re-launch of an enhanced HBO.com; and the development of a successful YouTube channel and an iPhone app. ![]()
