In early 2010, the network dominated the Golden Globes®, outperforming all other networks with four of the top television awards, including two for the HBO Films Grey Gardens and one for Taking Chance as well as one for the drama series Big Love®. HBO also hit a high note in 2009 when it received 21 Primetime Emmy® Awards, seven Golden Globe® Awards, five George Foster Peabody Awards, one Oscar® , four News and Documentary Emmys® and eight Sports Emmys® among others. In addition to HBO's Emmy® wins, Sheila Nevins, president, HBO Documentary Films, received the prestigious Governors Award. On the original programming front, four new series will make their debut in 2010—the dramas TremeSM, from David Simon (The Wire®), featuring an ensemble cast including Wendell Pierce, Khandi Alexander and Clarke Peters, in the story of the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina; and Boardwalk EmpireSM, featuring Steve Buscemi and Gretchen Mol, in the story of the rise of Atlantic City during the Prohibition era from executive producers Terry Winters (The Sopranos®) and Martin Scorcese; plus two half-hour comedy series, How to Make It in AmericaSM, starring Bryan Greenberg and Victor Rasuk in the story of two enterprising Brooklyn twentysomethings determined to achieve the American Dream; and The Rick Gervais Show, an animated adaptation of Gervais’ hit podcasts featuring the comedian, his collaborator Stephen Merchant and their offbeat friend Karl Pilkington. Returning series in 2010 include the second seasons of HungSM, Life and Times of Tim and Eastbound & Down®, the third seasons of True Blood® and In Treatment®, the 4th season of Golden Globe®-winner Big Love, the seventh season of Entourage® and the eighth season of Real Time with Bill Maher. HBO Films’ powerful dramas for 2010 include two films —Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes in the title role, as the author, animal scientist and autism advocate whose own autism affords her uncanny insights into the complexities of animal behavior; You Don’t Know Jack, with Al Pacino, Susan Sarandon and Brenda Vaccaro in a film by Barry Levinson which follows Dr. Jack Kervokian’s (aka Dr. Death) legal battles defending a patient’s right to die. HBO Miniseries will present the epic ten-part miniseries The PacificSM, which tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines across the Pacific Theater during World War II. Executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Garry Goetzman, the producing team behind the award-winning Band of Brothers®, the miniseries stars John Seda, James Badge Dale and Joe Mazzello. HBO Documentary Films for 2010 include A Family Is A Family: A Rosie O’Donnell Celebration, a moving portrayal of the remarkable diversity of families today; The Black List: Volume 3, featuring more dramatic portraits of some today’s most influential African-Americans; Reporter, which follows Nicholas Kristof, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist whose stories have helped put the focus on worldwide humanitarian issues; and A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back to Autism, which tells the story of a mother who has done everything in her power to help her severely autistic son. ![]()
