Dan's Story
Project Leader, HBO.com
When Dan Seldow isn't cycling, gaming, or exploring new restaurants using tools like urbanspoon.com and yelp.com, you can find him working on exciting projects for HBO as a Project Lead for HBO.com. As a Project Lead, Dan's day-to-day responsibilities include project management for the hbo.com website and mobile applications. In this role, he manages communications between the marketing leads and the development and engineering teams who facilitate development for projects on the site."
When asked why he loves what he does, Dan said, "I like creating things and solving problems, and seeing my work viewed by millions of people around the world. From working as an independent developer to working as a project manager on projects with lots of people and lots of moving parts, I like seeing things develop and pieces come together. I also enjoy doing it in a relatively low-stress environment with like-minded people – as a mentor of mine has said, 'We aren't curing cancer here.' That puts things in perspective on what might otherwise be a stressful deadline."
Before transitioning into his current role, Dan was a Digital Technology Manager for ThisOldHouse.com and Health.com at Time Inc. When asked how his previous position prepared him for his current role, Dan noted, "My previous position prepared me to work with all parts of the project team, including product managers, on-site and offshore QA, development teams, business teams and so on. The role also helped me recognize people's strengths and weaknesses as a way to ensure project and team member success, and how critical it is to have a vested, integrated 'customer' throughout the project. My manager at that position was critical in giving me the confidence and advice that I needed to succeed in that role, and helped me keep what's really important in perspective."
MAKING AN IMPACT
"My biggest accomplishment in Time Warner was my first project – the initial launch of the InStyle.com website. I was very inexperienced and had the courage to do a lot of things I had never done before, and took them in stride and didn't let my failures discourage me. Every single project I have contributed to since that time built on the successes and failures I experienced on that job. My biggest accomplishment outside of Time Warner was financial success in independent consulting, which came relatively easily because I enjoy my work and I work hard."

"My Time Warner career has put me to work leading projects for some of the world's most identifiable brands and their websites, including InStyle, PEOPLE, Health, Popular Science, Golf, This Old House, and currently HBO. I have worked for bigger companies as an independent developer, but none with the brand and image of those at Time Warner, and nothing makes me more proud than to say I've worked on these titles. Time Warner also fosters career development and work/life balance in a way that puts a focus on the employee, which is unique in the corporate world."
