Last week we told you what HBO's Westworld has in store for the South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference & Festivals and this week brings big news from Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Pictures is hosting the massive Ready Player One Experience, and Warner Bros. Television Group (WBTVG) and DC Entertainment are bringing the Super Hero Experience & Pop-up Shops to Austin.
In anticipation of the March 29 release of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, SXSW attendees can step into the immersive Ready Player One Experience with VIVE VR. A two-story, city block takeover of Brazos Hall, the event runs from Friday, March 9 to Sunday, March 11 and will showcase the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the film, including exciting virtual reality (VR) content from HTC VIVE.
The Experience begins from the outside, where the exterior of Brazos Hall will be transformed into the Stacks (the vertical trailer park where people live in the film's real world of 2045). Upon receiving their personal RFID wristband, guests will enter the venue through Wade Watts’ Van, the hideaway of the film’s young hero, and, from there, be transported into the OASIS, where the real action begins.
Split into two levels, the Experience allows guests to test their knowledge of `80s trivia, play arcade games, or look for hidden clues, to move up the Leaderboard to win fun prizes, including one grand prize per day: an HTC VIVE VR System. It also offers the chance for guests to score officially licensed gear; drop into 2045's hottest nightclub, The Distracted Globe; and enjoy `80s trivia happy hours and nightly artist performances, with special guest DJs and performers.
The SXSW Film Festival will celebrate its 25th Edition at the Experience with a party on March 10, and on Sunday, March 11 the Experience hosts the Ready Player One LIVE at SXSW livestream, powered by Twitch and IMDb, hosted by Aisha Tyler and correspondent Alex Correa.
The stream will be live on www.twitch.tv/twitch and www.imdb.com/readyplayerone and will feature some of the film's stars and filmmakers, including cast members Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Win Morisaki, Philip Zhao and Ben Mendelsohn; screenwriter Zak Penn; and author/screenwriter/co-producer Ernest Cline.
Meanwhile, WBTVG and DC are inviting fans into their SXSWXDC Super Hero lair with an epic pop culture experience from March 9 to 18.
The DC/WBTV bunker will not only feature the House of El’s otherworldly origin story with the upcoming SYFY drama Krypton (premiering March 21), but also Gotham City’s coolest wheels, with a display of Batman’s iconic onscreen Batmobiles and Bat-cycles. DC fans can also stop by to celebrate Superman’s 80th anniversary (check out the video below) and to meet legendary DC comic book writers and artists Jim Lee, Frank Miller and more.
There will be free Jitters coffee direct from Central City; exclusive beer tastings from Supernatural star Jensen Ackles’ local brewery, Family Business Beer Company; a special look at how the Constantine comic has been resurrected as a digital series; photo-ops with Teen Titans Go! and the original creature from Critters; exclusive merchandise; cast and producer signings with WBTV’s Black Lightning and more!
