Multichannel News (MCN) has named HBO Chairman and CEO Richard Plepler as its 2017 Executive of the Year 2017.

MCN cited Plepler for helping HBO become an industry leader. “Richard is an extraordinary leader and a great partner,” Comcast Cable CEO Dave Watson told MCN. “His focus on creativity and innovation has enabled HBO to consistently produce incredible content year after year.”

Under Plepler’s leadership, HBO’s original series are recognized as some of the most innovative and critically lauded programming on television, earning HBO the most Emmy awards of any network for 16 consecutive years and winning 29 Emmys in 2017 alone.

“In a time of ever-expanding viewer choice, HBO defines world-class and so does Richard,” Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner Chairman and CEO said. “Richard and his team are unrivaled in their ability to meld ambitious, breathtaking original programming and Hollywood hits with industry-leading innovations like HBO NOW — bringing HBO to its passionate and growing audience in new and exciting ways around the globe.”

Discussing the award and HBO, Plepler said, “I’ve been here 25 years and I have watched different iterations of our growth and of our evolution. I’m more excited for the future of this company than I’ve ever been because I see the line at the door and I see the opportunity for growth.”

For Plepler, that means HBO won’t slow down or stop taking risks. And neither will he.
