We’ve all wondered how the brains behind Game of Thrones manage to make fantasy an on-screen reality. The wildfire, dragons and three-eyed ravens sometimes look almost too real. Which, of course, is the point.

In the latest Inside Game of Thrones, special effects supervisor Sam Conway breaks down how those unforgettable scenes are created for the HBO series. From snow, smoke and wind, to pyrotechnics, Conway is responsible for all the little details that make us believe the unbelievable. In Conway’s words, “it’s an ever-evolving creative journey.”
