At the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity this week, three creative visionaries took the stage to discuss the power of storytelling and what it takes to create and sustain a hit show across multiple platforms. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes introduced The Power of Story seminar where Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and Veep creator Armando Iannucci sat down with journalist (and Veep executive producer) Frank Rich and talked about how their respective storylines resonate with audiences far beyond their White House and Westeros settings (see photos below).
Benioff, for one, finds it fascinating that people across the world – he noted Russia and Brazil – find resonance in the storylines with their own politics. And Iannucci said, "I've been both pleased and frightened to hear from people in D.C. that there really are Jonahs and Dans out there."
After the seminar, Iannucci and Rich spoke to the Cannes Lions team about the importance of engaging an audience through story and how a Scot can write about American politics. See what they had to say in the video below.
