HBO has joined forces with Cooperstown, New York-based Brewery Ommegang to produce a series of Game of Thrones-inspired beer. The first, a Blonde Ale called Iron Throne, will launch in March around the time of the Season 3 premiere of Game of Thrones on the 31st of that month.
"We are extremely pleased to have selected Brewery Ommegang. While there's a lot of competition in the marketplace, Ommegang's expertise and attention to detail in the industry make them the perfect fit for the Game of Thrones brand," said Josh Goodstadt, Director, Global Licensing, HBO. "Capturing the authenticity, essence and nature of the show, Iron Throne has the richness, quality and all of the elements one would expect in a fine ale."
The first-of-its-kind partnership between HBO and Brewmaster Phil Leinhart is focused on developing extremely relevant and tasty beer. (It's no accident that the first is a Blonde Ale in a time when the Lannisters hold the Iron Throne. But who knows what will happen this season...)
Iron Throne will be nationally available on draft and in 750ml bottles, for the suggested retail price of $8.50 per bottle, beginning in mid to late-March and will be followed by the launch of additional beers.
And, yes, this just might be the coolest Game of Thrones brand extension since the personalized Iron Throne itself.
