This past summer, Turner launched its accelerator program Media Camp and held its inaugural 12-week Media Camp Academy in San Francisco with six startups – Chute, Matcha, Showbucks, Socialize, Social Samba, and Switchcam. Accelerator programs are widely used throughout the technology industry with hopes of finding the next Facebook, and some corporations are now using these programs to foster startups with the potential for partnership or acquisition later down the road.
Yesterday, Businessweek published an article discussing Turner's Media Camp as a prime example of these new corporate-founded accelerator programs. Switchcam's Brett Welch called the Media Camp Academy a fantastic experience that taught him how the media business operates while offering the opportunity to build relationships with executives within Turner and its parent company, Time Warner.
In addition to the Academy, Media Camp holds events throughout the year for the entire startup community. For instance, the whole Media Camp team is scheduled to be on-hand for SXSW Interactive Festival early next year.
